Fix for map lights not coming on with door opening, but otherwise working.

So, I had this issue last night, and thought I'd post the fix for it. I couldn't get decent pics in my dark driveway, but if someone else needs them I'll try to take some in the daylight.

Symptom: map lights (near the front of the car in the headliner) no longer come on when the doors are opened, but pushing either of the buttons will fire them up, verifying that the bulbs aren't burnt out.

Problem: When you drop the Map Light assembly down out of the headliner (pull really hard straight down, be careful not to break off the edges of the plastic), and look at the backside of the switch. It's a simple plastic post that passes all the way through the assembly, and it has a copper plate on the back side. When the switch is in the DOOR position, it bridges the contacts. If It's in OFF, it opens the circuit. In my case, one of the little plastic fingers on the post that holds the plate broke, and the plate popped off.

The Fix: I was able to epoxy everything back together (the finger back onto the post, and the plate to both fingers for good measure). If you're unable to do that, you could probably solder a piece of wire (or the original plate) between the two contact points to permanently engage the circuit. Your map lights will now ONLY be on the DOOR setting, but otherwise everything will work as normal, just bypassing the switch.

If anyone needs pics, or a diagram, I'll try to post one up, but once you get the assembly out of the head liner it's pretty simple to see what the issue is.

147 views and not a single 'thanks' or 'that's helpful'. Weak.

Am I the only person this ever happened to?

I will say thank you, but haven't had it happen (yet). I don't remove it that often and probably neither do alot of other people which is why this would be a very uncommon issue.

Just started happening to my 3 a few weeks ago. I'll give your tips a try and hopefully it will fix the problem.

Problem fixed. When I popped off the map light cover, the copper plate mentioned fell out. I put it back in as best as I could and now everything works just fine. Thanks again for your help and knowledge fellow members.
