driver side HID flickering then not working

Hey guys,

So I thought over the harsh winter that my HID bulb and ballast on my driver side fog light got ruined and while I was down in Arizona I picked up a new kit to see if it was in fact the bulb/ballast.

Changed them out and the driver side still isnt working. If I move the plug back and forth it flickers and then turns off and it just does it all the time. Polarity is correct as it was powering up and the plug is pushed all the way in.

Any other suggesstions?

Re: driver side HID flickering then not working

i had this same problem, one side working and the other not. if you have power coming from the ballast it is most likely the connection inside the plug. the male and female ends dont always connect even though the plug is fully pushed in, to the extent of me snapping the plug take a look at the metal connectors inside the plug on both sides from bulb and from ballast. if there is any sort of carbon buildup (black dust, black anything) your connections are not meeting properly, the spark will jump flickering the headlight and the ballast will shut itself down basically. if your having troubles you can make your own connections by snipping off the factory plugs and installing new ones. simple m/f spades will do, or you can go the alternate route and hardwire them together eliminating the plugs altogether. you might be able to find the same plugs somewhere but good luck getting the wires into the plugs

Also, double check and make sure you are getting a full 12v to the ballast, HIDs need a constant 12v to power and stay powered.

So are you telling me that if/when I finally get around to installing my subs, the load the subs pull on a big bass hit will cut out my HIDs? In my old car (non-HID), they would just dim the headlights (depending on the song/volume). No dimming with HIDs, just cutting out?

You got it. Getting a second battery helps with dimming. Many will say "do the big 3" but that won't help much if any. It does help with current flow, but not current draw. In other words: stock alt, stock battery, stock wiring = stock power. You need power to make power. You could try a capacitor but these also provide extra wear and tear on the alternator.
