2012 Mazda 3 SkyActiv Oil change question

I was reading through the forums and it is time for first oil change. I bought the car with 31K. I have no idea what was used before. Is any fully synthetic 0-20w probably okay, or should I really get the Mazda oil with Moly? I read where it was a bit thinner and better for starting. However, right now I don't change my own oil. The place I go has Mobile 1, Castrol, and something for GM motors they use called Quantum (meets some GM standards).

The Mazda dealer I called just uses Castrol GTX. So I'm thinking it is probably okay to use any of my previous listings. What do the experts think? Or do they disagree as well?

Any 0W-20 is probably acceptable; that said, for our car it is only the Mazda oil with moly. I don't believe the Mazda oil is any better for starting, however, the extra moly is a great anti wear additive as well as a friction reducer for better fuel economy.

Oil can get very technical and can develop into a long discussion. You're under warranty to stay within their oil change interval and as the pervious poster said any 0w20 is fine. Once you start thinking about extended oil change intervals or racing that's when high quality synthetics such as amsoil become worthwhile options.
But if you do start thinking about extended oil changes I also recommend sending an oil sample to an independent laboratory such as Blackstone so that they can better advise you.

I do this from my phone. Do the BSD. Powered by Mazda 2.5l. Zoom-zoom 😎

Funny thing, the UOAs posted over at the BITOG web site show the Mazda oil with moly has much better numbers than even the best synthetics on the market, Mobil 1, Castrol, Pennzoil, and Amsoil included.

Facts don't lie. @shipo would you be kinda enough to link new to one. The motorcycle shop I work at is an amsoil dealer so I get a real price but I also have friends at car dealerships so I'm sure I can get also decent price there too.

It's been about a year since I was over there to have a look-see at the UOA numbers so I don't have any specific links to individual UOAs; here's a link to the Used Oil Analysis forum:
Once there you can use the Search facility to look for Mazda 0W-20 UOAs; if I remember correctly there were quite a few, as in dozens, last year; by now I would hope there are significantly more. Let us know what you see.

You know, this subject is beaten to death already. If you just track my posts dedicated to "what oil should I use", you will come to other threads where these posts live. But you shouldn't go crazy about it. Open owner's manual and read, and you will see that things are not as strict as you imagining.
