Noise from engine compartment

There is a drone noise which isn't affected by revving in the engine compartment which makes the car sound like a vacuum cleaner/hairdryer. I know that there is a ram air intake on this but the noise was there before installing it. Any help?

The noise sounds like this:

(unable to attach URL as I'm too new to the server) however if you search "Mazda 3 engine sounds like a vacuum cleaner" then you should find a video made by "Dougal McGregor"

Thanks

Given what another thread discovered it could be the alternator. Try and get close and hear exactly where it is coming from.

The location of the sound is hard to find but it sounds like the right side of the engine bay. If I remove the alternator and start the car. Should the sounds then be gone or?

You can try removing the serpentine belt and running the car briefly like less than a minute.

Also try moving the pulleys by hand including the alternator, checking for grinding or hard to turn. Water pump and crank pulley should be the hardest or almost impossible to move by hand. Rest of the accessories should spin relatively smoothly by hand.

One good way to tell where a noise is coming from is to take a piece of tubing and hold it against various parts and against your ear listening for the part that loudest emits the sound.
