CV Axle - Tone Ring
I have this noise almost narrowed down to a CV axle I replaced in 2013, the left side shorter one. Nothing looks wrong with it, the boots are clean but the noise seems to be coming from it when turned to an extreme angle. I guess it could be the bearing but every bearing I heard go out makes more of a groaning or grinding noise. The is definitely a loud pop. I used a gopro to capture the noise and it seems to be the loudest near the tire itself. What I think it happening is when it is turned at an extreme angle something in that knuckle is popping, maybe a bearing popping out of the CV knuckle? Anyway I am hesitant to go to the dealer because those are refurb and the difference is about $200 between an OEM reman and something from Rockauto. This one is probably from Rock Auto, probably Empire brand. Are the Cardone ones okay? If so, I see it notates that the tone ring is not included. I do not remember popping off a tone ring on the last replacement, does anyone have a picture of where it is and what it looks like?
EDITED: Okay, so reading further is this tone ring in the bearing instead? That would make sense because when I tear all of this apart I remember unplugging the ABS clip from the bearing knuckle.
