Question Would a bad cat cause a P0037 O2 sensor code?

I bought a 2009 Mazda3 2.0L. The car had the exhaust cut after the resonator. The prior owner replaced the rear O2 sensor but it did not clear the code. I ended up buying the remainder of the exhaust new and it brought the noise and driveability back to normal, but the O2 code still remains. I'm wondering if a previous owner cut the exhaust and then gutted the cat. Would that cause the rear O2 sensor to have bad readings? I'm tempted to buy a new cat and resonator to see if that fixes the issue, the current ones are pretty rusty so it wouldnt be a total waste of funds.

It could. Sensor (the one after the cat) is basically just there to verify that that cat is working. I'm working under the assumption. That you have already preformed the preliminary diagnostics, like vacuum leaks. You can also check the cats temp.

I should update that it was an O2 sensor after all. I was under the impression there was only a front and rear O2, but the middle O2 was the problem child. Luckily the rear O2 sensor I bought was the same one used in the center.
