Electrical Issue -- No radio, no power locks, no interior lights, random car alarm

Hello, all.

I've got a weird electrical gremlin and I'm hoping the community can help out. Thanks in advance for any tips/advice.

  • Issue started about 3 months ago.
  • Center console (stereo, lighting) stopped working, blinked out then back on. Turned back on when driving. Ever since the issue happens for a couple days at a time then reverts to being fine.
  • Car alarm randomly sounds when while the car is parked if the doors are locked.
  • When the issue is happening every time the car is started the air conditioner and defrost turns on (not the rear glass defrost).
  • Tripmeter randomly resets.
  • All stereo presets are lost and the stereo goes back to factory settings each time I start the car. (The CD player has been jammed for years and doesnít work.)
  • When the console isnít working there is a persistent light on indicating that there is a door ajar
  • All interior lighting does not work when the issue is happening
  • Door locks donít work from key fob when issue is happening
  • Chime reminding lights are on stops working when issue is happening
  • There are NO issues with starting or battery drain
  • Seems to happen regardless of temperature, climate

Steps taken:
  • Iíve changed the ďroomĒ fuse related to the center console lighting under the hood (it was not visibly blown but changed anyway). Seemed to work for about a week but the issue persists.
  • Iíve read online about a similar issue with this generation Mazda 3 and the owner traced the problem to a corroded wire near the fuse box.

This happen to a friend of mine who has a Volvo v50 but has the same platform and all electric circuits as our mazda 3.
He had problem for more than 6 month and had similar symptoms. The solution was cleaning the connectors under the passenger fuse box. You can search how it's done. You can use info of Ford Focus, Volvo V50/S40 that share the same parts.
Maybe when you had changed the fuses you temporarily make the electric contacts better for that week.

Thank you.

It turns out the bottom of the fuse box looks like "broccoli" and is a corroded mess.

Any idea where I can get a non-corroded engine fuse box replacement? An OEM replacement apparently costs hundreds. It would be great if I could find a part number.

Thanks for any input.

Check a pick and pull yard. You might get lucky.
