Need help with code P0455

So I just bought this car and it runs great but I'm getting a P0455 code. I've cleared the codes by disconnecting the battery for a while but it keeps coming back on.

I don't know anything about this car or an EVAP system. I watched a video on how to test the purge valve which I'll be doing tomorrow. Has anyone here ever had this code before?

According to the Mazda TSB, in some 2004-2006 Mazda 3 and Mazda 6 vehicles, the code P0455 could be also caused by a stuck-open purge valve. The purge valve can be tested with a vacuum pump, see the photos*here.

When I search for "Mazda 3 engine code P0455" I see three YouTube videos, so that's a good starting point.

My son's Ford Focus had a similar issue, and replacing the purge valve fixed it. It was easy to replace, and pretty inexpensive too. Good luck!

Most common cause for p0455 is a faulty gas cap which you already know. Other causes could be a bowl vent solenoid, vapor canister, or purge valve.

I tested my purge valve today and it seems to be in good working condition so I'll pick up a new gas cap and see if that helps.

Just an update. Looks like it was just a faulty gas cap...

Just a helpful hint about DTC, when you disconnect the battery you only remove the light indicating a code on the dash it does not re-set the DTC itself. The ECU will hold it in memory until the issue is resolved. You can also see this in the monitors.

Continuing to disconnect the battery may cause other issues and is not the correct way to diagnosis or re-set DTC.

The internet is full of inaccurate and poor information often MYTH often supported by other's that read it and pass on the information as valid or empirical.

The first thing I recommend to do when any DTC light is activated is properly acquire any and all DTC with a quality Diagnostic Scanner, note them and re-set and run at least one complete engine cycle and see which DTC are activated. Then look up the DTC and what the procedure is to verify the problem area.

Some DTCs don't activate with one engine cycle. The IMRC DTCs take 4 to 6 engine cycles to fully activate. BUT, a good scanner will show you that there are pending codes for those faults before the check engine light comes on.
