The Subaru dealer I purchased my Mazda 3 from busted the same story. They were asking $9600 for it. After we sat down for about an hour, they threw some BS numbers at me. The total after tax and license was 10k. I offered them $8000 and the salesman quickly gave me a smirk of "you've got to be kidding me." The salesman then went to talk to the sales manager (so he claimed). He came back and said $9600 was the best they could do. I then stood up and thanked him for the test drive and his time with a solid handshake. The next day they called me and said to bring in the $8000 cash. I already was aware of the games these dealers play. I have a friend that works at a Ford dealer in 'Cerritos Auto Square", a very popular auto mall here in the Los Angeles area. He broke it down to me on how the dealers work their magic to get every penny out from a customer, especially the service department. Most dealers only pay around 20% of the cars value from a trade-in. If the trade-in is in bad shape, they send it off to an auction. You wouldn't believe the stories my friend told me that most dealers do. It'll leave you speechless.
