is this a good deal?

a 2005 mazda mazda3 sport gt, with 180,000 kms. Automatic transmission, heated seats, all power options, sunroof all for $4500. Do you think this is a good deal? im a little skeptical about the high km's. This would be my first car, so thoughts?!

that high of a mileage with an automatic I would be skeptical, especially coming out of Canada (no offense).

Automatics on these cars aren't the best, and most tend to die between 140-160k miles, which means depending how much driving you're doing, won't get much use.

Also I'd be more cautious about rust than anything else since it is a canadian car, the price seems okay, or is that canadian dollars.. is that still like really different? At any rate.. I would get a very good look at it, because I'm sure there are a lot of things about to go wrong with it.

knowing what has recently been replaced would be good to know as well. Because at that mileage, which is only 11k miles more than me, I'm about to replace a lot of components (I don't have to, but it's a good time to do so)

That's a pretty good price, but yeah, what Nuse said, I guess autos crap out around there, and rust is a big issue. Where is the car from?

P.s. manuals are better

If the car is from Calgary, or Alberta in general, I don't think rust is a huge issue (compared to Ontario or Manitoba). How much salt do you guys use on your roads?

are you talking about the 4 speed m3 automatics or the 5 speed mz3 automatics?

An old mazda tech (20 years as a mazda tech) told me that the mz3 5speed auto in the 2.3L is a very stout transmission and he has witnessed unmaintained ones (i.e. tranny fluid never changed) go for 200k miles+

so I am hoping my well maintained 5at will go 200k+

According to me, no, but I dunno how hard it is to find 3s out west.
I would not be surprised at all if it was rusty --> lower value
That's quite a few KMs.
Was it babied/well taken care of?
Does it come with extras (e.g. winter tires?)

I sold my old GT GFX sedan, which WAS babied, rust free (fixed by mazda < 1 yr prior to sale), was to years newer than yours (at the time of sale) winter tires on rims and only had 100k on the clock, and had some extras like a spoiler, aluminum pedals and a shark fin for 6k.... and it took half a year to sell and I just barely got that.

If no extras, not babied and rust, 3000 would be a good deal in my eyes.

Keep in mind, when buying a higher mileage car you need to think about paying for pricey repairs.

Thanks for the input everyone. im not sure how much salt we use, but i think its a lot because a lot of cars here are rusted. i asked the seller if an inspection and carproof would be available and they said yes, so i'll see how it goes from there. most people selling mazda3's here overprice the hell out of them. some people want like 6 grand for an 04 mazda3 with a ton of km's. one day i'll find a good one, hopefully

All of them. No offense to your mechanic, but here on the forum we see a crapton of automatics fail and have problems at 160k miles whether they've been maintained or not.

In fact.. I don't know of a single automatic owner here that has been happy with their transmission through its life.

I'm no expert one way or the other but keep in mind that people that have problems usually complain, and people that have no problems stay quiet. I'm sure there's been automagic owners who didn't have problems... right? :P

Not doubting it; but the people that do have problems the timing has been extremely consistent; as consistent as our passenger motor mounts are at least.
