2014 Mazda 3s 2.5L Hatch versus 2014 CX-5 2.5L

2014 Mazda 3s 2.5L Hatch versus 2014 CX-5 2.5L

Been driving a 2005 Mazda 3 Hatchback for almost nine years and 150K Miles (mostly city driving of 40 miles a day in Chicago) and now time to replace it.

I'm torn between getting a 2014 3s (2.5 L) Touring or Grand Touring VERSUS a 2014 CX-5 Touring with either FWD or AWD.

I can't decide! Any advice?

Pros of 2014 Mazda 3 S 2.5 L:
--Prefer style, more classy that SUV look of CX-5--but not too much more.
--Better gas mileage.
--Perceive that the infotainment system (software) is better than the CX-5 and 6. I happen to like the way the panel pops out of the dashboard on the 2014 3. ( I know that's not a popular opinion.)
--The 2014 3 isn't overly large. The CX-5 feels relatively big in city driving compared to the 3. Maybe I'm just used to driving a 3.
--the 3's interior feels a bit more refined
--CX-5 feels like it rides just a touch too high while the 3 feels a touch low. I'm 6'3 and 200 lbs so that's important.
--I love the extra drivers seat room in the 2014 3 compared to the 2005 3's drivers seat.

Pros of 2014 CX-5
--a little bigger and higher even though it is Slightly less refined.
--possibility of loan interest rate deal (0.9%)-- not with the 2014 Mazda 3 all leads me to believe that the effective cost of the CX-5 might be about the same as the 2014 3--except then I factor in insurance and mileage.

Really, my big concern is size and getting in and out. Do the 18" wheels on the higher end 2014 Mazda 3's really raise the height that significantly? The CX-5 almost feels too high.the Mazda 6 felt pretty good, except my foot catches on the door threshhold which seems rather higher than most cars.

Then one quirk--I love darker blue cars--but the 2014 3 Deep Crystal Blue is almost black. The CX-5 blue is a touch better and then the bright blue CX-5 seems nice, if a bit too tart.

I made double my money back on the extended warrantee on the my 2005 Mazda 3 which I extended to 100K miles. Used it to replace engine mounts, air conditioner, rear window defroster. Which extended warrantee, if any, do you recommend for any 2014 Mazda?

This forum has been with me almost since I bought my 2005--Thanks to all of you.!

P.S. My first "Mazda" was actually a 1990 Ford Probe GL which was made by Mazda in Arkansas, a hatchback based on the MX-6. Had it nine years and 173K miles, mostly highway. That's why I decided to buy my 2005 Mazda 3.

I'll do my best to answer as an owner of both a 2014 MZ3 sGT Hatch and a 2013 CX-5 GT AWD. The MZ3 is the car I drive and the CX-5 is my wife's. I got her the CX-5 so she would AWD for the snow. I also got it because of the increased room in the rear seats and the height will make it easier when we have kids than her 2010 MZ3 would have.

On the Infotainment system. The three is much better and the Bose system is significantly better in the 3.

On Height, Even on 18s the 3 is shorter and has a totally different entry. I didn't notice any real difference getting in and out of my 2014 MZ3 than my previous 2012.

On Color. Obviously I choose the Deep Crystal Blue. I know this picture doesn't show the color well, but when sun light hit it the blue really shines through. I wanted something in-between the CX-5 blue and the 2014 Deep Crystal Blue, but I like this over the CX-5 blue.

I personally like the seats better in the 3 than the CX-5, but the position is completely different.

I haven't checked the 2014 vs 2014 on weight, but the difference in the 2013s was around 600lbs. Just something to keep in mind even with the same engine. One HUGE difference is the sport mode button and the paddle shifters in the 3.

All I'll say is only buy an extended warranty through Mazda, I don't trust 3rd party warranties.

Thank you so much for the reply comparing both. Good to know about the infotainment system. Have since seen the new dark 14 MZ3 blue. It's almost black. Too bad the colors--save for soul red--aren't that good this year. I really appreciate your response.

I keep wondering if the Mazdas they start building in Mexico will be 2015's that come early.
