Gas Mileage Problem - 2007 Mazda3i Sport

Yes, there was another post talking about how someone's '10 Mazda3 was shitty on gas or something. But all of that was in Kms and stuff. Im running a 2007 mazda 3i sport with roughly 54000 miles on it. I bought it used with 53000 miles and have been driving it for about 3 weeks or so. I LOVE my 3, but the gas mileage really is terrifying. For a tank of gas (14.5 gallons) ive been getting around 160miles. Tell me thats not completely wrong. If you do the math, my car is getting about 11 miles to the gallon. I dont drive crazy, I have a light foot.

Since it is used, could there be something that the other driver did to it to make it like this?

I have a Simota air intake, could that cause anything?

I have catbacks on it also, can an exhaust system tamper with gas mileage?

Im 17, new with cars, just really looking for some help. Not criticism.

mass airflow sensor. it hooks onto your intake. its the black little box with sensitive wires connected to it. an autoparts store would have MAF cleaner.

could that really help my gas mileage that much? With gas prices how they are, 11 miles to the gallon is like not an option right now.

check your engine air filter and change it if it's dirty. it should be changed every 2 years. if the maf sensor is dirty i would think you would get a check engine light. the maf maintains the correct air to fuel ratio in your engine. if it's dirty, it could contribute to your poor gas mileage.

Pretty much depends on your driving habits. With the mods in my signature, I can consistently get around 19/20 mpg in strictly city in my ATX, not exactly a light foot either. Then when I went to Maryland and back I got 33. Pretty much depends on your driving habits and that. I would check out the MAF sensor. If it doesn't solve your problem, it will just prevent future oddities. Check the filter on the Simota. If it is dirty, you can get a K&N recharge kit and clean the filter. (At least I am pretty sure you can. I did on my Cold Air intake) Also, if you have your AC on it can make your mileage drop. I go windows down 95% of the time. Also, the last little thing that can rob your power would be where you keep your AC compressor set to. If you have the climate control set to front defrost, even if you have it set to setting "0" (zero) it will still be on. So just start off with that. If that all fails, you can try Seafoam. If you search you can find a thread on exactly how to do it. It basically blows the carbon buildup out of your system. Check back if/when you try any of these things out and good luck.

Re: Gas Mileage Problem - 2007 Mazda3i Sport

Really appreciate that post! After getting my sensors cleaned, tires filled, and turned my ac off (had a hot summer), im getting around 18-20 half highway/half city. Honestly, its not impressive but its alot better and it's not breaking bank. I love my 3 so I can deal with it.. Just wish I was getting 35 highway like my buddy in his civic lmao! Too bad he has not shot of ever hitting like 80 mph.

Re: Gas Mileage Problem - 2007 Mazda3i Sport

If you just got the car Id change the oil/filter so you know there's quality stuff cycling through your car.
What octane fuels In it, and is it ATX or MTX?
I've had my mtx 3 for 3 months and driving spirited I average 23mpg city. My best tank so far was ~28mpg.

EDIT: MTX =Manual transaxle. ATX=automatic transaxle. Our cars are FWD and have a transmission/differential/axle combined called a transaxle. RWD transmissions and diffs are completely separate.
I'm In your shoes, first car, just starting to work on them and I strongly suggest changing your own oil and doing other maintenance. There's a great thread out there that explains how and if you have any friends who have changed oil before you shouldn't have any issue
