Looking at 07-09 Mazdaspeed 3, questions....

I have been reading a bit here at work, but am confused on what issues affect the Mazdaspeed version of the 3. Anything to look out for? Specific years? Are the good daily drivers, Are they generally reliable?

thanks!

I'd say get a 2010 if you're buying used. Based solely on my own experience, I know I would not buy my current car again if I could go back in time.

Major issues you could face with the 07-09: smoking turbo, factory shocks being rubbish, purge valve going bad, stock engine mount being a piece of garbage... these things could be costly non-warranty repairs

Minor issues that might affect you depending on your OCD level: windshield cowl rattle when it's cold, front passenger foot duct rattle ...note that not everyone's car has these issues, but if interior noises bother you, you need to test drive the car on the shittiest road you can find to be sure it's quiet.

There are many posts on many forums to give you info on the good things as well as bad, but in the end you need to drive one and see if it fits your needs.

Mazda- the only car company that should put
"SQUEAKS AND RATTLES........... No Charge"
on the list of standard features

Motor mounts are still crap, 1st gen or 2nd gen.

Smoking turbos are mostly limited to 2007-2008.

I don't know what you mean by the stock shocks being rubbish.

Cabin noise... Its core is still an economy car, just on steroids, what were you expecting?

Thanks for the replies, i am not really feeling the 2010 redesign, but loved the 1st gen cars. My thoughts were actually to get a used 1st gen MS3 now, or wait for the Focus ST to come out next year as I really want a fun and quick hatchback.

Or wait for them to bring the RS over to the states, but you may have to wait until the end of time for the that to happen...

Yeah, I have a 2008... and I have the smoking turbo and the cold weather rattle.

How would I know if I had a bad motor mount?
What do i need to be looking for in regards to the purge valve?

I haven't had problems with the shocks or the passenger foot area rattle...

But I do love your tag line about shake and rattles for free -- So true!

The motor mount is not defective, just poorly designed. It's prone to pre-mature tear. It depends on your tolerance. People claims a stiffer mount helps a lot with wheel hop, bump steer, and shifting. I'm still on the stock mount. The car still drives like it should, but I can definitely see room for improvement. Hope that helps?
