How are the 2010 Mazda3's OEM tires?

Tirerack.com says the OE tires on the 2010 3 Hatchback are Yokohama AVID S34D. The user comments on this tire are not encouraging. Most people say that wet traction is awful, and that the tires are useless in the snow.

To 2010 owners: what are you impression of the default tires? If I buy a Mazda3, should I get rid of the OEM tires ASAP?

Re: How are the 2010 Mazda3's OEM tires?

We have the Yokos on our '10 and so far I don't have any complaints. I don't drive the car much (it's the wife's work-and-back car primarily), and when I do it's not all that spiritedly so it's not like we're asking a lot of the tires in the first place. We're only up to about 1500 miles on the car so who knows how they'll wear, but just doing work-and-back duty, maybe 7500 miles a year, I figure they'll last quite a while.

As for "should I get rid of the OEM tires ASAP" - why throw away decent tires with tread? I'd ride them out till they're pretty much shot and then see what's available at that time. Unless you're using your car in some sort of competition, or find the Yokos absolutely impossible to live with (this should not be the case in my experience), at least give them a shot at four seasons to make a fair assessment before chucking out perfectly good stuff.

Re: How are the 2010 Mazda3's OEM tires?

Got about 5k miles on the car right now. Have driven the car in wet/downpour conditions and at highway speeds, they have handled fine. Although when winter comes around I'll probably have 10-15k miles on the car so I'll think about getting snow tires.

Like the others have said, no need to waste perfectly good tires. Use them, they aren't that bad unless you're street racing or something :-p

Tirerack says your OE tires are Bridgestone Turanza EL400-002. The user survey ratings are horrible.... My 7G Accord sedan came with the related Bridgestone Turanza EL41, which were also poorly rated by reviewers. The EL41's had only mediocre dry traction, fair cornering stability at best. The sidewalls were also cracked after 3 years.

Claff -- I'd give the OE tires a chance. It's just that reading all the bad reviews on tirerack makes me nervous about their safety.

24000-25000km on it and they Yokohomos will do well to last the rest of the summer. And no they don't grip well in the wet.

Re: How are the 2010 Mazda3's OEM tires?

Ugh... I live in the US Northeast and the weather can often be very bad. I'm trying to decide between a Mazda3 hatch and a Subaru Forester. The Mazda3 is a driver's car and the drivetrain is less expensive to maintain than the Subaru's. But I wish Mazda put better OE tires on the 3.

the stock yoko's are horrible driving fast through big puddles, like when I-95 becomes a pond for 5 minutes right after a huge downpour. if you know this and lay off the go juice when it is raining very hard, they're OK.

Re: How are the 2010 Mazda3's OEM tires?

I've got the Yokos on my 2010 MZ3 sedan.
When I got the car they said I get "tires for life" as long as I get them inspected every 5k miles. If they wear out, if they go flat, or blow out. Replacement is free.
This sounds pretty good to me. I've put 1500 on them so far.
Did anybody else get this?

Re: How are the 2010 Mazda3's OEM tires?

I think the Yohohama Avid S3.4 205/50R17's that came with my mz3 s Sport are OK all-seasons, pretty decent warm dry handling even, but aside from a rain storm on the freeway when I drove home from the dealership with my new car (and brand new OEM tires), the weather hasn't been cooperative in sending a lot of heavy rain to evaluate them in. Typical Colorado fall. When the snow did come, however, they were pretty poor (read as: worse than useless) traction on snow and ice, especially on hills/grades.

I've stored my OEM wheels/tires and am running 16" wheels and Hankook winter i*cept evo 205/55R16s and they are excellent in snow/ice/cold and happily also dry handling and especially considering their price ($82/tire) I'd recommend them to any mz3 owner. I'll probably hold onto the OEMs, but haven't decided if I'll store them to sweeten a hypothetical trade-in down the road and get some summer performance tires (and possibly wheels), or if instead I'll simply 'consume' the remaining useful OEM all-season tread life next summer to squeeze every dime of value from 'em.
