Thumbs up Looking to Buy a 2014 Mazda3 i-sport hatchback, need some questions answered please

Hello, my name is Mich, I am a first time poster and I wanted to thank you in advance for your responses.

G/f has been in a major car accident recently and she is looking to get a newer car.
I have been steering her in the direction of a Mazda 3 hatchback because of the 40mpg highway rating, 8sec 0-60, and because it's the only hatchback that doesn't take a hit in the Mpg rating from the same model sedan because of great aerodynamic performance.

I drafted these questions after doing some research online, and not being able to find all the answers, I apologize if I'm asking too much information ahead of time.

So onto the questions, the first four are about the transmission

0. Not really a question. I just wanted to verify these have Timing Chains, and no requirement for changing them, am I correct?

1. I know that to get the most out of this car I should be looking for a manual 6-speed. But that's not an option,
So I need to know how reliable the 6-speed auto is. What is the life expectancy before the rebuild needs to happen?

2. Does anybody know of any major problems with the Mazda 3 automatic transmissions? I have seen a couple cases online where there were failures to shift and TCM going into limp mode, etc, but this is usually an expected problem with any automatic transmission

3. Is it a dual-clutch automatic transmission? We walked away from ford focus because of it's dual clutch issues.

4. Do the automatic transmissions only come with a six-speed? Or should I be careful to avoid 5-speed auto models if they exist,

5. Does the car have EPS or something similar? This is electrically assisted power steering, we walked away from new Corollas because they were prone to steering failures because of this technology

6. Are there any components that require more expensive service than for example toyotas? If yes, which parts should we be careful about

7. What is the estimated life expectancy of the car? i.e the point in miles at which the engine needs a major rebuild, or transmission needs to be rebuilt (probably for the second time), but it's more expensive than the value of the car.

8. Are there any other major issues or concerns I should address before shopping for a 2014 Mazda 3? Safety issues especially

9. Are 2014 Mazda 3 on the Takata Airbag Recall list? I didn't see them on the Mazda 3 website, but I don't have a VIN number to enter into recall search

10. Can anybody recommend what I should inspect more thoroughly when looking at the car at dealerships.

Thanks for all your advice,
I'm looking out for the interests and safety of the lady, so I would hope the Mazda community will help me out with some input.
I also have two friends with 2014 Mazda 3 hatchbacks and they swear by them.

Again, I apologize if I'm asking a lot of information for my first post, but this is time critical and I need to get more information asap.

Thank you,
-Mich

2014 and 2015 current driver

Hope this helps over all and I am a first time post here. Over all both years have been good with out no problems as long as oil is changed. Gas is awesome on these cars. I drive many miles due to my work and you can't beat the car enough. I am use to having extended warrantee just because of bad experiences with almost every type of car except both Mazda has been a great value. So I recommend to anyone. I have picture of the car here recently from todY. I changed the rims and I opulent find any resources of what rims or tires to use. Found a great deal of perfect 2013 Mazdaspeed 18 inch rims and went for the 225 45 18. The stock tires were smaller. Has a better drive to it and has not affected the mileage nor speedometer.

Best of luck and I say go for it.

Welcome aboard.

3. No dual clutch.

4. I believe six speed only.

5. Yes, it has electric power steering. You would be hard pressed to find hydraulic power steering any more due to tightening mileage regs. And Mazda does EPS right with the motor mounted on the steering shaft instead of the rack. It works well, and I was a sceptic before I bought mine.

Thank you everyone,
I'm still hoping to get some more answers. B ut for now the Mazda3 looks like the best option of everything on the market.

One more question, the Skyactiv Automatic Transmission with a clutch for quicker up/downshifts shown in the video below. Is that available on the 2014 model? Or a later one? and which?

Also which models of 2014 come with a sunroof?

Thanks!

1. I know that to get the most out of this car I should be looking for a manual 6-speed. But that's not an option,
So I need to know how reliable the 6-speed auto is. What is the life expectancy before the rebuild needs to happen?

A) No, you do not need the manual 6 speed if you don't want it. The skyactive automatic transmission is awesome. It followed a lot of novel ideas to create a smooth shifting direct linkage tranny that wasn't a dual clutch.

2. Does anybody know of any major problems with the Mazda 3 automatic transmissions? I have seen a couple cases online where there were failures to shift and TCM going into limp mode, etc, but this is usually an expected problem with any automatic transmission

A) Havn't seen to many issues yet with the skyactives. So they seem to be clearing the 3-4 year mark with flying colors.

3. Is it a dual-clutch automatic transmission? We walked away from ford focus because of it's dual clutch issues.

A)Nope. But it isn't your normal automatic either. Youtube the skyactive transmission.

4. Do the automatic transmissions only come with a six-speed? Or should I be careful to avoid 5-speed auto models if they exist,

A)Only 6 speed.

5. Does the car have EPS or something similar? This is electrically assisted power steering, we walked away from new Corollas because they were prone to steering failures because of this technology

A) Electric assisted steering and braking. Still has backup direct linkage incase of failure. Crossing cars off because of this will leave you with a very small list of bland cars.

6. Are there any components that require more expensive service than for example toyotas? If yes, which parts should we be careful about

A) No personal experience yet, but I have read the mazda cars do have a little higher maintenance cost overall. Nothing to be careful about, although a lot of people have found the rear brakes can wear down fast, most likely because electronic assisted brakes make braking so effortless. (There was a time where the braking system used the back brakes more to prevent lurching forward, but this has since been updated in the software). Just realise that even though braking is so good, you should still brake early.

7. What is the estimated life expectancy of the car? i.e the point in miles at which the engine needs a major rebuild, or transmission needs to be rebuilt (probably for the second time), but it's more expensive than the value of the car.

A) N/A. skyactiv is too new.

8. Are there any other major issues or concerns I should address before shopping for a 2014 Mazda 3? Safety issues especially

A) None that I know off. There is a noise issue with the A frame near the front windshield that is pretty widespread. There is a TSB operation (ie not covered out of warranty) but it doesn't always work. I think the issue actually still pops up to this day an '16 models.

9. Are 2014 Mazda 3 on the Takata Airbag Recall list? I didn't see them on the Mazda 3 website, but I don't have a VIN number to enter into recall search

A) Don't think so.

10. Can anybody recommend what I should inspect more thoroughly when looking at the car at dealerships.

A)
Allways liked this video.

For 2014, the Touring model and above came with sunroof. However, in 2014 and only 2014, the sunroof was a Stand Alone option ($800). It was not part of the Tech Package, as in 2015. And it wasn't standard, as in the 2016. I hope this helps. I am a certified Mazda sales rep.
