Skyactiv 3 - more sluggish than old 2.0?

I bought a Skyactiv 3 i Touring 6MT and previously had a 2008.5 Mazda3 Sport 5MT and that i remember being lots of fun and very responsive. The Skyactive seems numb when rolling from start and just does not have the same immediate response to throttle - lazy is what comes to mind. I do appreciate softer/comfy ride though over the older 3.

Anyone else that feels like the base 2.0/MT was more responsive than the SkyActiv/MT - or is it just because i am transitioning to this new 3 from an RX-8/MT that it feels this way?

I also have noticed that my 2012 Mazda is not as quick from a stop as was its 2011 predecessor. The reason for that is that the Skyactive engine has a compression ratio of 12 to 1, and because of things that the designers did to permit the use of regular gas, the low RPM torque is less than in the past. (The gearing might also be a little different.)

Offsetting that, the mid-range performance, from around 3000 RPM, is excellent.

If I need to take off fast, I just give it more pedal, and watch the real time gas mileage drop to 5 or 6 MPG. <g>

Good luck!

Sounds like you bought the wrong car then, between the fuel economy complaint in the other thread and the lack of power complaint in this one.

Oh it serves its purpose - needed a high mpg commute car than my RX-8 (15mpg on premium on best days) but i was just trying to understand if its just me who can not get more than 32mpg even with civilized driving and that i clearly enjoyed the 2008.5 3 with MT more than this. It is in the end a commute car for me.
