Mazda5 commercial during Olympics... wow, seems perfect!

Wow... so I'm watching the Olympics tonight and during the commercials I hear "Zoom-Zoom", so I look over thinking to see a 3 or 6 commercial.* Nope, you guessed it.. a 5!* I have never once seen or heard about this so called Mazda 5 before 30 min ago.* But the instant I saw it, my jaw dropped.* It's EXACTLY the type of car I need!* My wife and I are just about ready to start the family and we're planning for a whopping 4 kids... so while a wagon or mid-size sedan would work for now, after about 5-6 years when #3 and #4 come, it's up to a full size minivan or SUV w/3 rows for $25-$30+.* Nope, no more need for all that, just get the $20k Mazda5 now and be done w/it... chock-full-o features to boot!

I'm only 22 right now and I wouldn't dare buy a mini-van, which admitedly the 5 looks are borderline, but I don't care... the versatility and features that I NEED meshed with the sportiness aspects that I WANT at a price of $20k?* pfff... how can I pass this up?!* I'm only planning to buy later this year in like September, so hopefully they'll still be making them and won't kill the 5 because of poor sales.* I just saw a commercial during the first day of the Olympics, and my wife just came across an add in a magazine, so it definately seems like they're making an effort to get the word out.

What tranny you guys recommend? I'm completely borderline between stick and auto... is the auto responsive and smooth?

The exhaust recall is all fixed up now too... right?

FWIW, the other cars in my consideration(maybe not anymore...) are the Mazda3 5-Door, Subaru Impreza 2.5i Wagon, Honda Civic Sedan, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry.

Saw that commercial too. Sharp-looking young guy walking down a high school hallway getting admiring glances from the gals. reaches a classroom where the teacher is packing up. She looks up and smiles, obviously the person he's there to pick up. And then they pan down to show the real reason the girls were smiling at him, he's carrying a baby around his front in one of those sling thingies. They load up their 5-speed Phantom Blue Mazda5 and zoom away. Pretty cute.

And jandree, the stick is a bit quicker, very smooth, and has been returning 10-20% better gas mileage for most owners, plus you'll save some coin, so if it's really a tossup, the stick seems like a no-brainer. And by September they might be talking about the 2007 models and possibly some updates. At any rate, the 5 is definitely deserving of a spot at the top of your shopping list.

I'm not speeding, I'm qualifying

Re: Mazda5 commercial during Olympics... wow, seems perfect!

Test drove one tonight. Yeah, I'm gonna buy one. Looks a lot less mini-van'ish in person, build quality feels great, and most importantly, it's fun to drive! I was amazed how a car w/this body style can have suspension that's tight as a drum around twisty roads. They only had auto in stock so I tested that, but was still surprised by the acceleration and overal responsiveness of both the engine and tranny. The "sport shift" worked well. I really liked how the automatic had that display screen of what gear you're in, very sweet touch... does the 5MT have this little screen too? I still have a feeling I'll opt for the 5spd. manual... less cost up front and slighly better gas mileage(10-20% better?!)

My ONLY concern is that with both back seats in the upright position, I can't fit a folded up standard baby stroller back there... is that a correct assumption? Not that it's that big of a deal because IF we have four kids as planned right now, it's at least 7-8 years away... and my wife will probably get a full size SUV or mini-van at that point anyway... so I'm not letting that aspect get me down.

Also, I mentioned my concern to the sales-lady about the possibility of them discontinuing the 5 because of any poor sales and she said they've been going as fast as the 3's and actually, she had no brochures because they were backordered... so they're gonna stick around it sounds like.

Thumbs up to Mazda, they created a real winner here!

The "exhaust recall" was a thing where people with the auto-stick were leaving the tranny in a lower gear and cruising at highway speeds. They fitted a new muffler and completely shielded the entire exhaust. There was supposed to be a warning sticker that didn't come to be. But ya, it's all over with.

You'll like the 5. The only complaint I have is the lack of armrests. We have the auto, it gets 1 less MPG than my 05 MZ3. A rock steady 24 mpg per tank.

Anyone here have kids and already drive a stick? The reason my wife and I didn't get the 5 speed was that we didn't want to have to worry about shifting gears when reaching back to hand off a juice box or mop up some kool aid, while dodging semi trucks. I guess it highly depends on your driving style, but something to consider nonetheless.

But then again, we satisfy our need to shift with our other mazdas.

Been through the raising of 5 kids, I always drove stick, Mom's vans were 1 stick and 3 Auto. 4 Auto if you count the MZ5.
Stick or not, I was always: "Damn the Kool-Aid, FULL SPEED AHEAD!!"
