Yesterday, my wife and I were just leaving the car wash, going thru an intersection at maybe 35mph, I had a flashing yellow. 18 yr old girl in a 96 Cavalier had a flashing red coming off an exit ramp. She's stopped, but just as I get there, she turns away to look for oncoming traffic so she can take a left in front of me, and takes her foot off the brake. She doesn't see me coming at all and rolls out into the intersection right into my path! I'm like 20 ft away with no place to go, no time to stop. I remember I couldn't believe she wasn't looking. I brake as hard as I can and try to avoid her to the left around her nose, but she just keeps coming till the whole lane is blocked. She might have even gassed it to make the turn, cause her front end is completely smashed and the impact really punted us.
We impact, my front passenger corner to her front drivers corner, takes out my front passenger tire and pushes it into the back of the wheelwell. Impact deflects me over and across the 8" tall median, and that takes out the front drivers tire, now there's no braking or steering available, we go across oncoming traffic (thank God there was nobody there) and into the opposite curb, wheels turned full right, the drivers front wheel impact actually shatters the concrete curb. Bumper, passenger side fender mangled. Passenger front door won't open and is badly dented. Passenger rocker panel buckled, passenger rear door dented & scratched but still operates, passenger rear wheel and wheel arch crunched and mangled. Unknown damage (but there has to be plenty) to the underside of car, busted radiator, grille, passenger foglight. No damage visible to headlights. Airbags did not deploy on either vehicle (I don't think the impact was great enough). I figure I was down to maybe 25mph at impact, then was bounced off the pedals by the impact with the car and median. It was a very hairy ride across the oncoming road, really scary.
This was her second accident since getting her license in May. Everyone, including her, her dad, two witnesses and the cop verify my story, and the entire conversation was witnessed on the cell phone by my State Farm operator (probably recorded). Though it's obviously her fault, the cop didn't cite her cause "she's only 18".
We are supremely bummed out and hoping it's totaled, the 5 is so messed up I just don't want it anymore. Had it towed to the Dealership. I did buy Gap Insurance, salesman tells me not to worry. I think if they don't total it, I'll have them fix it then trade it right away for another. My wife noted that she barely got to drive the car since we had it. First that ridiculous recall, now this crash. I'm just glad nobody was hurt.
Had some trouble sorting out my webspace, I figure pics are better late than never!
