My 5 is WRECKED!!!

Yesterday, my wife and I were just leaving the car wash, going thru an intersection at maybe 35mph, I had a flashing yellow. 18 yr old girl in a 96 Cavalier had a flashing red coming off an exit ramp. She's stopped, but just as I get there, she turns away to look for oncoming traffic so she can take a left in front of me, and takes her foot off the brake. She doesn't see me coming at all and rolls out into the intersection right into my path! I'm like 20 ft away with no place to go, no time to stop. I remember I couldn't believe she wasn't looking. I brake as hard as I can and try to avoid her to the left around her nose, but she just keeps coming till the whole lane is blocked. She might have even gassed it to make the turn, cause her front end is completely smashed and the impact really punted us.

We impact, my front passenger corner to her front drivers corner, takes out my front passenger tire and pushes it into the back of the wheelwell. Impact deflects me over and across the 8" tall median, and that takes out the front drivers tire, now there's no braking or steering available, we go across oncoming traffic (thank God there was nobody there) and into the opposite curb, wheels turned full right, the drivers front wheel impact actually shatters the concrete curb. Bumper, passenger side fender mangled. Passenger front door won't open and is badly dented. Passenger rocker panel buckled, passenger rear door dented & scratched but still operates, passenger rear wheel and wheel arch crunched and mangled. Unknown damage (but there has to be plenty) to the underside of car, busted radiator, grille, passenger foglight. No damage visible to headlights. Airbags did not deploy on either vehicle (I don't think the impact was great enough). I figure I was down to maybe 25mph at impact, then was bounced off the pedals by the impact with the car and median. It was a very hairy ride across the oncoming road, really scary.

This was her second accident since getting her license in May. Everyone, including her, her dad, two witnesses and the cop verify my story, and the entire conversation was witnessed on the cell phone by my State Farm operator (probably recorded). Though it's obviously her fault, the cop didn't cite her cause "she's only 18".

We are supremely bummed out and hoping it's totaled, the 5 is so messed up I just don't want it anymore. Had it towed to the Dealership. I did buy Gap Insurance, salesman tells me not to worry. I think if they don't total it, I'll have them fix it then trade it right away for another. My wife noted that she barely got to drive the car since we had it. First that ridiculous recall, now this crash. I'm just glad nobody was hurt.

Had some trouble sorting out my webspace, I figure pics are better late than never!

Re: My 5 is WRECKED!!!

Wow, that sucks. Probably by design that the airbags didn't go off, as the impact was up on the front corner. Good thing that nobody was really hurt in the crash!

I wouldn't want the car back either after a horrible accident like that.

Re: My 5 is WRECKED!!!

Dealer's body guy is talking 6-7K to fix it. Says it isn't as bad as it looks. He says all the damage is bolt-ons, no frame bending or welding. We'll see I guess. Look like we're stuck with it, but we might just trade it after it's done. I tried to upload pics, but the forum wouldn't complete the task. They have all the parts on order & say they'll be here on Wednesday (tomorrow). Just waiting on insurance adjusters at this point. I got State Farm, they're very cool about it, but she has Progressive... makes me nervous. Before we washed the car we stopped off and deposited the recall check. Pretty ironic. I keep telling myself I shoulda got around her somehow, but there was just no way, no room.

Thank God nobody was seriously hurt. I hope the repairs are done well and that you don't end up losing too much after all is said and done. My mother actually went through a similar experience with her new Accord. I think she had 180 miles on it when a woman entered a shopping center by turning left across her path. 8,500 dollars worth of damage on the poor Accord. She is so sick about the whole thing as it was so new still. Glad you're still thinking about another 5 if you end up selling this one too.

Re: My 5 is WRECKED!!!

Saw the almost finished 5 yesterday... man they did an EXCELLENT job! Not a rattle in it, tracks straight, everything works fine. Cannot tell the diff between the old and new paint. It's like it was when new. Total was a few bucks past 10 grand. The other person's insurance took full fault, so it hasn't cost us a dime, in fact we're getting $10 a day for driving our other car. I get there and the head of the body shop tells me that they replaced all 4 tires, that they had to eat the cost of one, cause the insurance co. wouldn't pay for it or new center caps for the 3 new wheels (?!!). He then says they aren't the tires it came with... they're Toyo Proxes T1-S's!!! I wanna put them on my 3! They have some minor detailing to do, & I'm supposed to pick it up today, after the caps come in. If it's good, I'm not trading. We keep our cars long and wear them out, so the value isn't all that important as long as it's mechanically right & looks good. It'll be great to have it back.

Got it back, it's sweet. Correction, the new tires are T1-R's. Back in the driveway, finally! Maybe we can hang on to it for a while.

Re: My 5 is WRECKED!!!

I can pretty much relate! Had a 2003 VUE for about 8 months. Was exiting onto a street from the freeway, looking left because theres a full 2 blocks of merge lane.. around the corner, some dumb*** driver is stopped! early nineties cavalier cost 11 grand to fix it. The saturn repair center fixed it almost perfectly (forgot to hook up the horn, left one fog light bulb broken).
Problem is: the car is severely devalued because of it. I had no doubt it would probably be fine forever since the damage was mostly cosmetic and radiator. So, upon trade in i think i took quite a hit in value.
My advice, if you feel like they did a good job, drive it atleast for the four years left on the warranty. Any little issue, take it in.

Good to hear you are all safe, it could have been much worse!

Re: My 5 is WRECKED!!!

LOL - 10 years left on the warranty. It's in very good shape, we'll drive it till the wheels fall off. My wife took the old van to work on New Years, just in case. She still wants to keep it nice. Good on her, I say. It's still worth every penny to us. We really don't wanna trade it. We're very confident of the dealer repairs, these guys are meticulous. Thanks all for your concern & good wishes, we feel lucky there weren't injuries.
