Just bought a 5... and a 3!

Hi! As we looked for a car to replace the family Astro, we chanced across the 5 about an hour after they took it off the truck. It's a Platinum Silver automatic touring model with DVD NAV + climate control. Fell dead in love & bought it that day. So new there aren't any accessories available. It needs a cargo cover, bra, and mud flaps. The dealer tells us we're the 1st in Ct. Next day, I came back & traded my Sunfire for a Velocity Red 3 5-door, 5-speed. Funny thing is, we came in to drive a 6!! It was a fine car, but the 5 does the family job much better, with better mileage (1st tank yielded 21mpg, that includes test driving, "how's the power" checking, "take me for a ride" type driving.... I just couldn't resist the little 3 for myself. Best road car I've ever had. Great value, both! The 5 is built as well as the 3, with a higher sense of luxury, to be sure. Brakes are fantastic. It's 4" longer.

Both are such sweet rides! The only thing I noticed that's even the slightest detracting is the brake dust created by the stock pads. Less than 200 miles and the wheels are getting filthy. Will the dust slow as the brakes wear in? If not, does anyone know of GOOD pads that don't produce so much dust?

I'd be happy to answer/investigate any questions you may have on the 5.

Unfortunately, with everyone using aluminum wheels these days, break dust is an ever-present problem. There's many different pads out there, from metallic ones to the "green" ones, but I'm always afraid to try them for fear of getting squeaking and such (esp from the metallic ones).

Congrats on the cars though! Where are you?

Thanks. I just didn't expect they'd be grungy so fast! I'll be looking, but ready to switch back & put up with the dust if the performance isn't there or they squeak. I won't change them out till they need it.

Re: Just bought a 5... and a 3!

I bought a 5 on Sunday, a "Touring" (GT in Canada) 5-speed in the same colour as you. I noticed the brake dust on the front wheels but not so much on the back. The 3 is supposed to have issues with dust on the back wheels, right?

Post some pictures of the 5 without the side sills! Be very interested to see it.

Re: Just bought a 5... and a 3!

We got ours Thursday, the 3 on Saturday. Side sills? You must mean the ground effects type runners on the bottom? Mine's got em. I can't imagine anything lower than that on this car, but I'll post pics as soon as I get a chance to take a few shots. I wanna get pics of them both at once. This isn't likely to happen to us more than once... lol! I guess I really got a wild hair.

The 3 seems to have more dust on the rears, but the 5's got some there too. I just figured it was cause i'd been zipping around in the 3 and the wife drives more slowly anyhow. I was amazed at how fast it accumulated. Very noticeable in 150 miles.

Looking at your pics, I see you think the nose is shorter than the 3's too. That was what I thought at first too, but I figured it out (how they got 2 more seats in and only lengthened it by 4&quot. They moved the whole nose and windshield forward, leaving the front wheel in place. So the windshield starts just forward of the wheel center, vs just aft of it on the 3 (about 4&quot. The beltline is much taller, but overall the roof isn't further from the top of the doors by that much except toward the rear. The hatch is more upright, and the combination of the three allows about a foot for the extra seats.

Yeah, the ground effects - so you got the "popular equipment package" with the side sills and the CD player etc. Nice.

Pretty clever design - doesn't leave much room in the engine bay but still, a very fun vehicle to drive ... I really love driving the 5-speed.

Re: Just bought a 5... and a 3!

Hmmm, this car's so new everything seems to be a bit goofy when it comes to info.

This is the way they're available here. Note the "upgrades to MAZDA5 Sport include:" mentioned on this page, which is correct:

http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/buil...modelYear=2006

When you go to the "view full features & specs", it correctly reflects the info on my sticker. The only options it has are:

Wheel Locks
DVD Nav
Ca/YN emissions

No popular equipment package.

So, I have all the items mentioned as "S" on the Touring model. When you go to build a Touring, there are items listed as options that are standard, and no TPS system (not mentioned anywhere, not even on the sticker, but mine has it) or DVD nav (which I have, and is on the sticker), or rain sensing wipers, closure assist, (both of which I don't have) and probably a few other things.

Point is... for the US, "view full features & specs" is correct, and the build page seems incorrect and incomplete.

This makes me assume that the 5 has been rushed into availability here in response to the rise in fuel prices. Of course I could be wrong, because this is only my first experience with Mazda. Probably, the web site is a little off (the 5 is there only as #4 on the home page's "what's new" links.

Wow, the models are reallllly different in Canada and the US. Up here our Touring (GT) comes with the wipers and the closure assist, but the NAV is not available at all.

Re: Just bought a 5... and a 3!

I am trying to decide about the purchase of a Mazda 5 Touring. My only hesitation is that I live in Arizona and it is very hot. The air conditioner in the Mazda 3 has elicited over a hundred complaints on Edmunds.com and there are already three or four topics about problems with the 3's A/C on this site . Since the 5 is based on the 3 I am concerned about whether or not Mazda has fixed the a/c problem. The 5 has Auto Climate Control whereas the 3 just has A/C but I think it is basically the same unit. Any reports from new owners of the Mazda 5 regarding cooling would be most helpful. It seems that on the 3 the compressor shuts off prematurely and the car has to get quite warm before it comes on again. Some owners report the car never getting really cold and that they have to leave the fan on the highest setting.
