Re: How to: Change the Color of your Radio LCD (Pictures)

yeah I had a problem like that -

not on my cluster but on my radio --

My pa had given me one of those COld- Hot electric soldering guns -- that apparantly heat up to like a million degrees super fast ... well lets just say it says on the instructions " don't use on electronics " which of course I read after applying it to an LED. it burned not only the contact point off ( melted it into nothingness ) but it burned a tiny hole in the actually circuit board itself .. yeah .. so I messed around for quite awhile with a real soldering gun and made a kind of solder line from the contact of the led all the way to the far part of the soldering board where it attached .. that seemed to do the trick.

If you can't reach the point to solder you might try dremeling away the plastic thats in your way ? as long as that wont mess up putting the whole thing back together? Either that or get a soldering gun with multiple tips -- some have pretty small tips like a cheap one that I have.

Damn, sounds like you might have melted a piece of your circuit. If unsoldering/resoldering won't help then you may need to try what rdk said. I guess just scratch away at the circuit until you find some unmelted or undamaged connections and work from there. Good luck!

Hey Rdk87 so I'm looking at the LCD on the cluster (with the odometer/trip meter). I can't seem to find a good way to get to the LEDs without unsoldering the ~20 connections behind the LCD. Did you find a better workaround?

Not trying to step on Rdk87's toes here, just putting in my
I found that the was the easiest/cleanest way to do it for me. I saw one howto that suggested dremeling (if that's even a word) away at the plastic to get underneath it to the LEDs, but that just seemed too messy and risky with it still on the board. Once I desoldered and removed the LCD I found that that method wouldn't have worked for me anyway since aparently my cluster had 4 LEDs under the LCD and the one in the howto only had 2.

Oh ok awesome, so you ended up desoldering all the ~20 points? I'll do it if I have to, I just won't be happy :P
