Well got to gas station not much gas left and realized that the gas cap was stuck and gave it a good turn and it snapped in half. I looked around and see that this is a normal problem unfortunately have no gas in the car and dont want to go through the hassle with towing it or anything. I was just going to order a replacement cap but i was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to remove the cap thats stuck now. Here s a pic

Use a flat tip screw driver to turn it and take it out, then go buy a new one. Had this happen to a buddy of mine before.

Maybe a set of needle-nose pliers could grab the "cross-thingies"
^And yes, that's a technical term.

I had this problem too, but I was very far from home/anything, and my response was a bit less reasonable than yours: I threw a hissy fit at the gas station and, in a rage, broke the cap into a dozen pieces with a pair of needle-nose pliers I had in the back. Then, of course, I got the emissions/gas cap check engine light, took it to the dealer and bought a new gas cap.
Just be careful when you're destroying the cap that you don't drop pieces into the tank. There is that metal flap that will catch pieces, but if you're not careful where you're sticking the pliers/screwdriver, you can accidentally push the flap in. Good luck! |

Just stick a rag in it like in the "olden days"

A rag will stop the sloshing, but not the CEL. Get the new cap, drive with it for a few days and the CEL should turn itself off (did for me). Or you can take it to a mechanic and have them dismiss the code. Either way.

I had this same problem on my 08.5. I got it out by using pliers and twisting it clockwise. It just kinda popped out. This is a problem known by mazda, and if your car is under warranty then I'm pretty sure they'll fix it for free with a redesigned, new mazda cap. Give your dealership a call and they should be able to help you. This was really the most pleasant experience I've ever had with my dealership. They just looked at it, yanked it out and gave me a new one. I singed a paper and was on my way.
