Default Transmission - 1st gear to 2nd gear odd grinding

Hey guys...I've had an on/off problem with this and I can't figure it out.

When I'm WOT off the line, shifting >5500 rpm (usually closer to redline) from 1st to 2nd I get an AWFUL grind and it won't go into 2nd. It's almost like it almost engages, gets stuck, I have to pop it out of wherever it is in 2nd, and then I can fully engage. This only happens 1st to 2nd as I've rowed through gears 1-4 at redline to be sure.

I've tested it various ways and I've made sure to depress the pedal all the way to floor (ick) and it still has happened. At first I thought it was me not engaging the clutch all the way (I don't shift by pressing pedal all the way down) but that's not true.

Now i'm not sure if it has something to do with my TWM SS (which I've had on the car for about 15k miles I think) or not but it's something that just started happening.

Any thoughts?

i don't know...

i think it has a lot to do with my short shifter.

i've been meaning to do a tranny flush anyway so we'll see what happens this weekend

I'm not sure if other cars have "syncros" but VWs have gear syncros and when they start to go your going to start to grind going into gear like what your experiancing then after a while you won't be able to get it in at all unless you double clutch. So if Mazdas do have syncros I'd suggest double clutching until you can get it replaced.

All modern (last 40y?) manual cars have synchros.

It could be a problem with the 2nd gear synchro, have you had problems downshifting to 2nd? It could be the large RPM differences that cause the gear not to engage properly. If it's under warranty definitely get it checked out.

BTW - that's a nice looking sedan you got there

thanks for the link. it seems to be the same problem i'm having, however most of them are all new.

i've got 46k miles on the clock, looks like i'm going to just take everything apart, grease it all up in all the right places, and go from there

thanks for the help

hmmm i tore my tranny out and put a new one in after i broke the housing for thinking it was cool to drag race with stock motor mounts... anyways the new tranny i put about 10k miles on it and the 3 to 4 sycro is going out join the club! thank god i saved the old gear box maybe i can salvage something.... i believe syncros are fairly expensive for these cars
