Default Check Engine Light - Automatic for oil change?

Hi everyone,

I have a MS3 2008.5 and the check engine light came on yesterday. It has about 9100 miles on it and it was last serviced at about 4,500mi. Any chance the light came on because it's overdue for an oil change?

I was leaving for work in the morning, just pulled out of the driveway, pressed my rear defrost button and the car beeped at me and the light came on. I'm not sure if it was coincidence that it happened when i hit the rear defrost button or it was related... my car goes in on Monday... but I need to drive it a little bit this weekend and don't want to f@!k anything up.

Any thoughts?

A CEL is not a reminder that service is due. Most often, CELs are caused by improperly tightened gas caps.

To help determine what the issue is, we need to know the code. Can you go to a shop (auto supply store) to have it read or see if a local friend has a code reader? Otherwise, you may have to visit the dealer.

I've had the CEL come on at the exact time I was doing something too, just a coincidence that it came on when you were pressing the defrost button.

Even if it was the gas cap, I would still need the check engine light reset though correct? It wont just turn off even if the "problem" is resolved?

If it is the gas cap, the light will eventually go off.

I always like to know what code the CEL is, whether I think its the gas cap or not.

I called around to a few auto places, and those that were open said they would charge an hour to check the light.

I have a service appointment for Monday w/ the dealer, so I guess I'll just wait until then. Hopefully it's nothing serious :X

Those repair places are trying to rip you off. Most auto supply stores read them and do not charge. It takes about 30 seconds to read a CEL.

ya go to retail auto stores like autozone or advance auto parts. they are the stores that do it for free. auto "shops" will charge you.

You could probably even buy a basic code reader for the cost of getting a shop to check it.

Well I got the car back from the dealer (7.6k maintenance) and to find out about the CEL. It was error code B1261 and it had to do with a Solar Sensor which the guy said related to the automatic temp control for the AC.

I also had an annoying rattle in my hand break. The button was lose and would rattle, but the second i touched it w/ my finger it would stop. They went ahead and ordered me a new hand break which I thought was cool. I guess the button can't be tighted or changed by itself.

Anyways, +1 for the Mazda dealership being helpful and cool. He also stressed that I shouldn't worry about driving the car if the CEL is on (I told him I didn't drive it all weekend). Only if it's blinking to worry.
