Poll: You Won't Believe This. Engine Oil Overfill By 4+ Quarts = White Smoke

Yesterday was one of the most depressing days of my life.

Had my friend change my oil for me as usual. As I left his place lots of white smoke started billowing out of the exhaust. Pulled over within half a block and shut off the engine immediately. Called my friend he followed me back to his place a few blocks away. He pulls the engine cover and plugs. Spark plugs #1 and 4 have dried oil stains. #2 and 3 are wet with oil.

At this point my friend thinks it's either a blown head gasket or valve train issue. I decide to leave my car at his place and borrow one of his cars to go home and do research/decide on courses of action. Btw my initial searches here for blown head gaskets didn't return much, save the occasional Mazdaspeed 3.

Today he tells me over AIM that he figured out what happened and it was his fault. WTF!

He forgot to drain the oil before filling the engine up with 4+ quarts of additional oil!!!

Is my engine fucked? Vote in the poll. If so, which part(s)?

Man I was so sad yesterday. If it makes any difference, I'm using Amsoil in the recommended weight. Also I didn't drive far, maybe 5 blocks round-trip. The whole time I kept it under 2,500 rpms when accelerating. Let me know guys.

Oh and I did see him change the oil filter and filter gaskets. Just didn't open the drain plug to fully drain the oil.

How is the world do you forget to drain the oil before putting the new oil in? Draining the oil is the first thing you do! Your friend is a dumbass, sorry!

I don't think your car is fucked, just drain all the oil out, and fill it up with 4 new quarts and a new oil filter

Drain and refill with the proper amount. You should be fine after that. If you want, you can also do a compression check to make sure the rings weren't damaged.

edit: This is a common occurence when people start rushing. Just be glad you had too much oil rather than not enough.

Yeah he's going to do a compression check today.

I figure it's a good tool for finding out large variations between cylinders, but what if they're all damaged similarly so the leakage is equal in all cylinders? He's a Honda guy so how would he know? Is there some kind of normal level for most 4 cylinder engines?

There is an average range depending on the engine. I'm sure you'll be able to find the numbers somewhere in the service manual. I'd be more concerned with large variances between the cylinders as it's unlikely that all 4 were damaged simultaneously.
