Default Clicking sound when I go to put car in gear

When I have my car running and I hit the brake to put the car into gear I hear this click sound coming from my shifter ( I have an automatic). It sounds like hard plastic is getting tapped with a finger.

The dealer said it was the safety mechanism that prevents you from putting the car into gear without hitting the brakes. But I have had the car 3 weeks and it just started or I just noticed it.

Anyone else have this problem? I want to know if its normal.

dude its not a problem, its exactly what your dealership said. You probably just havent noticed it until now. Took me like 3 or 4 weeks to finally notice it.

Check your other post on this matter that I responded to. For future reference, only post a question in one part of the forum. Cuts down on the clutter...

This is the norm it seems for most atx trannies now, it's the mechanism ehich sets the trans out of park or something like that. I't been years since I've had an auto car, but I remember hearing it in a saturn, nissan, dodge and a toyota.

yeah my car has just started to make this noise as well. As soon as a heard i knew what it was but I have had my car for well over 8 moths now. Going to have to contact the dealership to see if there is anything they can do to get rid of the noise. doubtful but i will try none the less

Oh yeah, if you hear it when you press on the brake pedal and sound comes from shifter.. Yeah I have that too. I doubt theres anything that can be done about it either. I've never asked my dealer, but others on here have said nothing can be done, it's kinda "normal", haha.

Our 98 Minivan never did that, although you had to step on the break to shift into drive or reverse, it definately never made any clicking sounds and was pretty smooth shifting gears... my mazda3 is less smooth...

any modern atx requires the brake pedal depressed, some shift smoother than others. I remember a saturn trans banging into gear and it was normal. Trans #1 was rebuilt at 120K or so and it also was the same. That's the difference curve on the automatic trans between manufacturers.
