Default Mazda is a scam

Don't get me wrong, I love my car but I have to rant a little about the way Mazda engineers their products. I think their design philosophy is get as much money out of the customer for maintenance as possible. I came from owning 4 Honda cars before I bought my Mazda3. These were the easiest cars to work on, everything was cheap and readily available.

On the other hand the Mazda3 is a total pain in the ass when it comes to maintenance. Want to change the oil yourself? Take off the splashguard, unbolt the hex drain plug for the housing, unscrew the housing, replace the filter, put it all back on. In a Honda you screw it off, screw it back on.

Want to bleed the brakes yourself? Well your SOL cause the brake and clutch fluid share the same resevoir. You have to take it to Mazda where their 'machine' takes care of it for the low price of $110 plus tax. Cost to do this on a Honda? $0.00

Those are the only two things so far I have come across. I wish I would have researched Mazda service before I bought the car cause with these non-standard ways of doing things I would have definitely bought something else. I like Mazda's they are reliable and fun to drive. But if you like to work on your car yourself forget it.

Rant Over

I dunno about cheap and readily available. Own a Honda Prelude. I have to order my parts in from either CT or CA Honda Parts distributors. Takes about a week for them to get to my local (OH) Honda shop and costs insane amounts. ($400 ea. for rear calipers, no there are no aftermarket ones to replace it and parts stores do not stock the part). And lets not get into how much it cost to find and replace the lower A-arm bushing and bolt.

Now, my Honda Civic has thousands of parts everywhere, only a few parts are hard to come by or aren't stocked in the parts stores.

I have heard about the new caseless oil filters. Doesn't sound like much fun. Didn't know about the Master Cylinder though. That will suck.

My point, ANY company you go with, you could be stuck with a car that is expensive or difficult to work on. Just be glad you didn't buy a mid 90's Audi (used to be known for breaking down quite a bit and costing $$) or an older Saab. In the older Saabs, the oil pan was the top of the transmission housing (WTF type of design is that?) And there were other issues (roomate had one for a few months. Had to replace the oil pan gasket... now he owns a Toyota Trecel)

Sean, this is how good cars are made - take a look at the underside of an Audi for example. Or at the way they design the muffler and how it fits within the rear bumper, etc. Mazda did a good job with the 3.

Its not right to compare a 95 Civic to your Mazda.

New Civics are just as worse.
