I just recently replaced the aftermarket HU that was in my car, preparing to install an amp and sub. Only after did I start really digging in and find these two videos:

If I can have an AUX wire and I can still wire up an amp and sub (I know that using the LOC will result in less customization as it just splits off of speaker wires) that pretty much covers my needs.

Not to mention it's quite annoying with the aftermarket deck not having any steering wheel controls or the small upper LCD screen with trip computer and environmentals.

Just wondering if anyone has experience doing it this way? It's kind of concerning because you just have to tap into the stock wiring harness as opposed to attaching the aftermarket harness. But it seems a ton better as you can retain all the functionality.

Looks like the only products needed aside from an amp wiring kit are:

Also, I know that some people have wired the upper LCD somehow, but can only retain one part of it's functionality, either the trip computer, the temperatures or the clock.

And I know that I *should* be able to wire the steering wheel controls into the deck I have, but I haven't been able to figure that one out yet. The deck in there now is a Kenwood KDC-262U.

I'm pretty sure I'm just going to settle on the aftermarket headunit/amp setup. Using the LOC I'm sure would work, but not having any adjustments as far as Sub levels and tuning seems like it may a nuisance at some point. Not having steering wheel controls really won't bother me that much, reaching over isn't a huge deal. As far as not having the small upper LCD that is still something I'm curious about, I may try a few things and I'll post here if I have success.
