So all "how-to-install" exhaust tip articles say to match the exhaust pipe diameter to the inlet of the exhaust tip. But if they are the same size how will the inlet on the tip fit over the pipe? Should I go up in size on the inlet to 2 1/4" since that's the next largest size I see available?
It is a stock exhaust. I bought a clamp-on style tip so that I wouldn't have to cut or weld the existing pipe but that may be my only option. I don't like it because why else buy a clamp on if you need to cut & weld? And why do all instructions tell you to get the same size pipe-to-inlet?
Makes sense. I didn't want to get an after market exhaust because it's just an economical car for me, but I did want to improve the look a little.
I ended up taking it to a muffler show and they are going to cut the existing pipe and weld on the tip. Probably better in the long run that way. Thanks for your help.

It was just to weld on and it was high. I basically got my tip for free and the convenience of getting it done right then swung me to accept the charge.
