Infinity Basslink vs. Kenwood wOOx
« on: June 23, 2004, 04:11:22 PM »
Im looking to get a powered sub and these two are small which i like.  Ive  seen some people say good stuff about the basslink, but does anyone know anything about the wOOx.  also the wOOx is only 4" height,  do you think it would fit under the passenger sit?   thanks

The Basslink has the better track record. I have the Basslink and it does exactly what I expected it to do....fill in the lows that the other speakers lack. I heard a w00x in a store and was not impressed. It seemed to clip very early.

Sorry, no pics.
I have it in a MZ3 sedan. It's in the left front corner of the trunk. It will definitely take up more space than the w00x, which some have installed it under their front seats.  With either choice you're still going to have to install a power cord from the battery to the sub as well as outputs from the head unit. The basslink made more sense for me because I already had an amp in the trunk.  The Basslink may cost a bit more but I think it's worth it.

Kenwood = no good sound
Infinity = well known quality sound.
There is a new tri sub basslink with passive radiators as well, which should give a bass lover that extra kick if its wanted.
Kenwood speakers and subs, in no way compare to infinity in anycase.

I have some install photos, will post here shortly but some notes right quick: Woox fits under passenger seat, just barely clearing the air-bag sensor components. The wOOx sounds much tighter firing into the floor than up at the seat, and I think a bit of work on a more solid mounting solution would help even more. It's a very easy install, only tricky bit is the grounding point, and conveniently there is an unused 6mm nut welded inside the passenger doorsill for this. Again, I've got photos of all this (except the HU wiring, sorry).

Truths about the wOOx: you will not rattle the neighbors windows, turn heads with boom in the shopping-mall parking lot, cause body panels to come loose, remove clothing from your passengers, etc. You sure as hell will not win any sound-pressure-level contests.

However, as the least-invasive way to bring out the low-range in your music, the wOOx is the best compromise. It sounds tight when kept within its range, though I find I use the remote to tune the levels a fair bit, so I'd recommend keeping it handy (fits perfectly into the slot next to the shifter).

OTOH, the Basslink sounded damn good to me, and proper subs in boxes with good amps obviously even better... but with a stroller and other baby stuff in the hatch, I simply didn't have the room for them.

I would love to see your setup with the woox.  I'm waiting patiently for my woox to come.   8)

« Reply #7 on: June 23, 2004, 09:03:27 PM »
The wOOX install:

In situ, front view.

Rear footwell.

Airbag sensor clearance.

Move the seat fully forward to fit the wOOx in place.

Running the powerline through the hood-release grommet (PITA w/ABS pump in the way...).

Speaker-level tapped at the HU.

Running wires from the footwell to under the seat through the structural beam. Black plastic is the rear heater vent duct.

The grounding point. Found a 6mm nut under some tape on the passenger side doorsill. Perfect.

Edit: added HU wiring photo. Also, with some wiggling the wOOx fits parallel to the passenger floor crossbeam 'foot-rest' rather than fore-aft, thereby becoming completely hidden and out of the way. Working on some bracket designs to mount the wOOx to the underside of the seat rails.

Does it show in the rear footwell with the passenger seat pushed all the way forward? Yeah, look at the fourth pic above; the seat is fully forward (practically in the dash... you must have some very short passengers, LOL). The wOOx is about as long as the seat bottom, so given that the structural beam is the furthest forward you can position it, moving the seat any less than 2/3 back will reveal more of it in the rear footwell.

Hmm? Well, I thought it sounded sort of suffocated... Think it shouldn't be wrapped up?

Hahah. I left it in the bag to make sure it would fit before doing the install. Didn't want to mess it up if I had to send it back, and it would show better in the photos than black on black (always thinking of you guys...).

I figured as much, but you could just be from one of those homes where the furniture is covered in plastic.  Or the ones with the 'sitting rooms' that noone is allowed to sit in...

It's sounds good to me without compromising any useable space in my car...this is the biggest plus point if you are comparing the 2.

You know, for quite awhile I debated about doing the same setup under the seat.  I'd love a subwoofer, but my dog's crate fills the trunk in my sedan when her and I travel together.  I tried to measure out the space under the seat there, and I couldn't decide if there was enough room or not, but it appears from your pictures that there is room.  One question, does that woofer shake the passenger seat?  I don't think my passengers would care much to be shaken the whole time they ride with me   I've always thought that such a small woofer probably wouldn't bother that seat much, but I could be wrong.

Oh, I just thought of another question... Did you leave the rear foot well vent that occupies a lot of the space under the seat in place, or did you remove it?  I was worried about it blowing hot/cold air right on or under the speaker and potentially damaging it.  In one picture the speaker appears to be right on top of it.  Also, did you just leave it sit loose under there, or did you screw it into the floorboards?

I've actually go the WooX installed under driver's seat as cars here are of LHD, it does shakes the seat to a certain extend, not too much an issue as I usually try to keep the vol. to a comfortable listening level.

WOOXy details:
Ran the speaker wires from the front channels just behind the head unit, a la vaBoom's tutorial. I tapped in with some nice 18g male/female 'bullet' crimp-on connectors so if I ever want to hook anything else up there it will be easy plug-and-play, and they fit into the connectors supplied with the wOOx. I was quite proud of my wiring job, but so excited to be 'done' I didn't take any pics of it. An in-progress look:

The bits you need:

14-16awg x .25" ring for the + battery post
6mmx10 nut for ground
18awg t-tap for the aux-on switch
18awg bullets for the signal lines

As far as the heater duct, it's still there. The carpet pops up a good half inch or so over the duct, which itself is sticking up off the floor a bit, so all told there's enough squish for the wOOx to fit without having to (re)move anything. As for air blowing on the speakers, dunno if that will be a prollem or not. I run the fan almost constantly at #1 or 2 and don't notice anything.

I found the sound is much tighter with the speakers firing into the floor, and now the seat shakes much less than it did before. Still quite a bit of bouncing around going on and I think a more solid mounting would definitely be better, as would a more secure foam-wrap and zip-tie job on the electrics under the seat.

Hey!!!! Look at that... wOOx fits sideways! What's your location? No heater ducts, and presumably no under-seat electronics... I gotta go try a sideways fit again.

Nice install on your tweets, too. Guessing you didn't have them already? The "grill" on the stock tweeter a-pillar panel is much larger than most actual tweeters, so custom ones have to be mounted inside at a less-than-optimal angle.

Seems the wOOx thread has passed on, but I figure this bit's good for the record: wOOx will fit under the passenger seat, cross-wise, right up against the forward crossbeam even with under-floor heater ducts and airbag wiring. Takes some squishing, but once it's in there it's snug as a bug. Nice thing is that it no longer encroaches on the rear passenger footwell, as is completely invisible when you look into the car. Just be careful to route the wires under the seat so they won't snag on the wOOx when the seat is moved fore and aft.

Which wOOx are we talking about anyway?  There are 2.  Do they both fit under the seat?  Also, how do you mount them down to the floor so it stops moving.

The 6" WA62RC. So far mine's held in by sheer willpower, the mass of electronics under the seat, and the springiness of the underfloor heater duct and moulded carpet. Once the seat is rolled back a bit, the space below it is too small for the wOOx to slide back out of.

I did speaker level, yeah... An amp for the Infinity speaks is in my future plans, so I'll go to a line level then (out of the amp maybe?).

I recently discovered http://www.emachineshop.com and am thinking about designing some brackets to mount the wOOx to the underside of the seat rails. If anyone's interested PM me... Found that with some wiggling the wOOx fits cross-wise just behind the passenger foot-rest/crossbeam, perfectly clearing all the plugs and wires under the seat.
