ATF MV vs Dexron III

Hi guys,

This question might have been asked a couple of times before, but the truth is I haven't been able to find a definite answer.

Is ATF MV equal to Dexron III?

Re: ATF MV vs Dexron III

Short answer is probably not.

Longer answer is that ATF-MV is pretty close to Mercon V, except that ATF-MV has a higher anti-shudder property than Mercon V (I believe anyway, don't quote me on that). Dexron III is similar to Mercon, and Mercon is different than Mercon V, so Dexron III isn't probably a good replacement for ATF-MV.

Re: ATF MV vs Dexron III

Maybe I or that poster have different or outdated service manuals, but I wasn't able to find anything. This obviously isn't every document in the service manual that states the fluid type, but I read through the entire section and didn't find any special notes or anything.

Mazda did release a service bulletin regarding Mazda ATF-MV and Ford Mercon V, but it doesn't mention anything about Dexron III.

Re: ATF MV vs Dexron III

Our transmissions are fairly picky about fluid, and are certainly quite hard on it...I'd only use fluid that specifically says it's M-V compatible (not just Mercon V). Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF has worked quite well for many folks around here, myself included.

Re: ATF MV vs Dexron III

I saw this posted elsewhere on the forum, but this seems like a good place to post.

How about this fluid?

http://www.amazon.com/Red-Line-30504...825&sr=8-1

They have 4 and 12 packs available too.

I'd want to keep away from the Mazda Fluid, as it goes bad very quickly (at least the stock stuff did).

Re: ATF MV vs Dexron III

seems very expensive, specially since Mobil 1's is like 25% cheaper no?

I have Mobil1 in my car right now. It's not the right kind, is it?

If it's Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF, then it's just fine -- it's rated as being compatible with ATF M-V. I've been using it since I had 30k on the car, and the car has 82k on it now.
