Doesn't look like anyone's done a write-up on it yet (maybe that's something I'll do at my next oil change), but if you have the owner's manual for your car, I'm pretty sure it's outlined in there. Basically, just remove the battery box cover and duct, unclip the air filter box lid, and carefully lift it up and swap the filter.

The battery box has an air duct going to it. There's one screw on the right that needs to be removed and it should lift out. The airbox has 4 metal clips that snap down. After that, you should be able to lift it up enough to get the filter out.

I went out and bought a new filter today only to find that the previous owner or dealership must have replaced it already. Bought it with 30k miles, now has 45k miles, but the filter looks brand new.

Similar situation here, just got the car with 60k miles and the filter looks brand new. The crazy thing is I could *still* tell a huge difference when I put in the K&N Filter.

Re: How to change air filter on mazda 3 2006?

Hey guys,

sorry to bump an old thread but just had a quick question. I bought a Fram air filter to replace my old one and I can't remember how the old one was. Is the filter suppose to drop allll the way down or will it sit close to the top? I had trouble getting it closed for the longest time(Why do you do this to me, Mazda?). Thanks for any help.

The rubber gasket around the ouside of the filter will be flush with the top of the lower airbox half...should be even with the seam where the top and bottom pieces fit together.
