Oil Filter Wrench

I m curious as to which size cap wrench i need for the 2.3 canister filter, some say 76mm with 14flutes, some say 75.6 with 14 flutes...i can't imagine how much difference .4mm could make? I did the first oil change with a 76mm wrench that was a 76/74mm...the depth of it i think was at fault of the minor slippage. I have since picked up an A251 from pep boys to see if that works better on the next oil change. But prices for the mazda filter is ridiculous plus shipping, I tried to get my local dealership to get it for me but they claim they can't find the listing even though i gave them the aks75150 number. Also, trussville mazda sells the aks75150 while mazdastuff sells the aks75140...once again whats the deal with the size?

Re: Oil Filter Wrench

The filter housing has 14 flats and is actually just under 74 mm. You need a 74 mm wrench. I tried a 76/74 and it did not work for me on the first oil change. You can't get it far enough on to get to the 74 size. Many here report you can get the correct size from Autozone, but we do not have them there. I found a plastic one at Walmart that kind of worked, but it is too big. I now have lined it with aluminum duct tape and have tested it to the specified torque in tightening, but have not taken off the housing yet. That is still a month or two away. See this photo:

Re: Oil Filter Wrench

Not a chance that a 76.5 mm wrench if it is really that size will work. See this link for some specific measurements:

Assenmacher make a 74 mm wrench, but it is expensive.

* * *Excuse me, 75.6. I got upside down in the Bermuda Triangle. Anyway, I bought two of them from Mac Tools. The part number is OF903. They fit the housing perfect. The price per unit is $18.49 plus tax.
I decided get my vainer calipers out and check to see if the number stamped in the top of the socket was real (75.6 mm). Well, it looks like they measured from the tip of the hex to the tip of the hex, which is not right. When measuring from flat to flat, it looks to be about (74.9 mm). It's just a stamped metal socket. Nothing high tech.

Re: Oil Filter Wrench

I think the best choice is buying it at Trussville Mazda (Alabama) .Why pay $18.75 when the original wrench cost $5.00 / retail price $12.75. Even at retail price you are still under $18.75. I bought mine al www.trussvillemazda.com .
It's worked great for me and best of all I'm saving me some money because everytime you take your car to the dealership
they want to charge you almost $50.00. To much!!!!

I tried to get it at the dealerships with no luck. They said they don't sell them to the public. That was two different dealerships in two different cities.(California).

well the one they sell is not the correct one... they sell the AKS76140 and its black correct? according to mazda it needs to be a AKS75140. how they can sell either for $5 is a surprise to me.. is it stamped AKS? cost is over 2 times what they sell it for so i have a hard time beliving its the same one.

Re: Oil Filter Wrench

Let me correct myself when I bought it it cost me $14.75 but now is $5.00. Trust me it's the original filter wrench. I've used it about 3 times and it fits perfect on the filter housing. Why would a dealer sell non-genuine parts and fool the customer.I,ve ordered
parts from them many times and had no problems in not being original. The oil wrench I use ,is the same oil wrench the dealership uses here in Puerto Rico!
