Greetings from Cincinnati, Ohio!

I'm surprised it's taken me this long to join a Mazda 3 forum. I have been wanting one of these cars for over 10 years. Backstory: My mom bought a used, red 1973 RX-3 wagon when I was about 4 or 5 years old. She has always owned Mazdas ('73 RX-3, '79 and '78 GLCs, '83 and '85 RX-7s, '01 Tribute, '16 CX-5). I really liked the Protege5 when they were around as it reminded me of that old RX-3, but I've always owned GMs and driven a pickup for the last 20+ years. I was in a restaurant drive through line back in 2005 and was behind a 2004 or 2005 Mazda3 5-door/hatch and I fell in love with the car. I test drove one in 2005 and that sealed the deal, but with 3 kids under the age of 5 (at that time), it just wasn't a practical family car. I ended up getting a crew cab pickup in 2006. I test drove several others after that, a Gen 2 in 2012; A Gen 3 i in 2014; Was close to pulling the trigger on one of the last 2013 MS3s, but didn't.

Fast forward to 2017 and I've decided I REALLY want a Gen 1 Mazda3 S Sport 5 speed. It's got to be black, grey or red and have the black/red cloth. It has to be a 2.3L with a manual transmission. Essentially the car I wanted in 2006 when I got my 2006 Silverado crew cab. I've got a 2016 Sierra 2500HD crew cab SLT that I use for work, but I finally got the wife to agree that of all the mid-life crises to have, things could be a LOT worse than a $4-5K 3rd vehicle (4th if you count the 2016 CX-5 we got for my daughter to drive)! I'd love to find a good condition 2008 or 2009 version. I found a clean 2006 version <100 miles away yesterday, but someone beat me to it. Still searching....

A few comments:
  • Welcome to the forum.
  • I'm a fan of the Gen 1 Mazda3 as well (regardless of whether it is the Sedan or the 5-Door); I had a 2009 for a while and loved it.
  • Regarding your search for an early Gen 1 5-Door; here in the U.S. they all come with the 2.3 liter motor.
  • Unfortunately the 2.3 is developing a spotty reputation for longevity; some seem to run forever, others go Tango Uniform with less than 100,000 miles on the clock.
  • The good news regarding cars with the 2.3 is the 2.5 liter Ford Duratec engine is the virtual twin of the Mazda motor, except it has more power and seems to have far better longevity.
  • There are plenty of threads on a 2.3 to 2.5 liter conversion all over the internet.
