New to the forum

Hi,

I have a 2013 Mazda 3 Skyactive hatchback. It is a great little car!

There is one issue that my mechanic hasn't been able to figure out. The headlights surge. They get brighter, then back to normal, brighter, back to normal on about a one second cycle. The car has the six speed standard transmission. It seems to only happen when I am slowing down, usually with my foot on the brake and sometimes just coasting. For example, I downshift from fourth to third bringing the RPM up to say 3500. The headlights get brighter, normal, brighter, etc. It is more pronounced with the brakes on and seems to stop when the RPM drops below 2000 - 2500. It seems more likely to happen when the car has been running for a while, to the battery is fully charged. I do not notice any change in the brightness of the dashboard lights when this is happening.

My mechanic has put an electrical system tester on the car, and it tests fine, although that does not duplicate the conditions under which it usually happens.

The battery has been recently replaced.

A friend has suggested checking for a faulty ground. Any other suggestions? I would like to get this fixed; it makes my nervous!

Thanks,
John

Perhaps a bad regulator in the alternator, but just a guess.

Welcome aboard.

It seems like the voltage regulator, but I hate to spend the money on a new alternator/regulator if that isn't going to fix the problem.

Any thoughts on the bad ground theory?

Possible, but I would think it would be more than a slight dimming and more of a cutout. Hopefully others more knowledgeable will weigh in.
