Is my Eonon D5102 done for??

Several years ago, I installed an Eonon D5102. The last couple of years, when it got super cold outside (below 0 degrees F) I would have a problem when turning on the D5102. It would display the Eonon logo, and then just go blank. The backlight was working fine. I would turn it off and not turn it on again until the temp warmed up, and eventually it would come back on and work fine. This past winter, though, it did the same thing, but never came back. I can clearly see that the backlight is working, and as of right now, I don't even get the Eonon logo anymore.

Does anyone know if there is a fix for this?? I have had luck in the past with 'baking' PCBs to reflow the solder (several times with my old school Xbox 360), but I am unsure if I could do the same with the main board in this unit. Otherwise, does anyone know if there is a component (or several) that would cause this? I have no problem replacing the individual pieces, I just suck at diagnosing. I can 100% guarantee that it is NOT the screen itself...I feel that it very well could be the driver for the screen. If I were to put it back in my car right now, I get the beep from the touchscreen, and can clearly here static through the speakers. The unit was fully functional until late December.

...now before anyone jumps at me because I should 'just buy a new unit'....I have had this car for over 11 years, it has 150,000 miles on it, and I am currently a full-time student...so, I don't see the point in sticking that much money in this car, even if I did have it. I just got so used to music on the SD card, bluetooth, and the built in Navi....please help!!

It could literally be ANYTHING unfortunately. These units were built cheap and I can confirm they were not built with automotive grade components which means failure rates become significantly higher as time goes on. Based on the fact it seems temperature related, I would say it's probably some component is going out of spec due to the cold and causing the problem. From what you mentioned it seems like once the unit warms up it's totally fine, even while driving. This makes it seem even more likely it's a single component causing the issue and not a bad/loose solder joint or something (but it's not impossible). Reflowing a few solder joints is likely not going to do much.

So, since it seems you have some electronics skills, what you could do at this point is take your HU apart and hook it up to a bench power supply (most colleges have some sort of electronics lab with these so you should be set for this) and get some electrical component freeze spray like this. You could then go around and start freezing different sections of components inside until you isolate the area where you get the same behavior as in the car. Just be careful with the LCD. This would narrow down where the problematic component is likely to be. Good places to start though would be any capacitors you see on the board, as those are usually the first electronic components to start going bad. There can be a major difference in quality grade for capacitors and I doubt the ones in that unit are actually good. If you see any bulging or leaking ones as well this could also very well be the source of the problem.

Unfortunately, "just buy a new unit" would be your next option if you can't really find anything. The only other way to really dig into where the issue is would be to go around with a multimeter and probe each component one-by-one but that's just not worth it if you ask me. Also, replacing SMD components suck without the right tools. Unfortunately even today (though things are slightly getting better) with any of these Chinese head units you basically get what you pay for. There's a reason why name brand 1/2-din aftermatket navi units cost so much.

Anyways good luck!
