Question Suspension Upgrade

So I'm looking to upgrade the suspension on my 04 Mazda 3 Hatch and i was wondering what is a good set would be to purchase without destroying my bank account, i also have aftermarket 17x8 wheels so there is not much gap between the wheel well and the wheel. Also seeing how easy it would be for me to complete this task by myself.

Depends on what you want. People hate on raceland coilovers....and if you are trying to take these coilovers to the track it's probably deserved. But for daily driving and a little spirited driving here and there they are fantastic imo....but konis and some springs would be fine...but I believe you can get the coilovers for around 400 dollars.

You can either go Lowering Springs w/ Struts/Shocks which is OEM like not very stiff.

VS. Coilovers you can go lower and the ride is a lot stiffer & Bouncier....even w/ adjustable dampening!...the Adjust Dampening is a MUST if you get coilovers though.

I had both setups.....For me I have ISC Coilovers, these are great for Daily Use and the weekend Mtn. Cruise too....They are a lil bumpy when hitting bumps in the road though they handle fantastic!

If you already have 17x8 wheels, hopefully you have good tires, because other than racing school, wheels and tires are the single best improvement you can make to a car's handling.
Think you are Goggles Pisano and have a good set of tires (not the cheap chit just to have a "stance")?
My suggestion would be:

Springs from an 07-09 Speed3
Koni Str.t shocks & struts
Adjustable rear swaybar (hotchkiss, racingbeat, whiteline, etc)

That will keep your car as a nice Daily and still give you improved handling for some very spirited driving, auto cross, fun.
Coilovers are a waste of money on a DD, trust me, YOU will be the only person who likes to ride in your car, and even you will tire of the bone jarring setup.
Especially when your girlfriend dumps you for the dude with a stock suspension cuz she is embarrassed to roll with you.
