Brake pad not all on rotor

Hello all,

Quick question since its been awhile since my brakes were replaced and can't recall how they looked like brand new. I got new front brake pads and rotors yesterday. I come home and noticed by peeking at the visible brake pad that is visible through the rim that the top of the pad is not really on the rotor. Is that because its a chamfered edge? Im used to seeing the brake totally on the rotor, like the back brakes. I know the middle of the pad is on the rotor. I have a 08 Mazda 3 btw. Picture of the brake pad attached.

Looks like a chamfered pad. Not sure if that's how the OE pads were.

Sent from the wrong side of the tracks.

Like @GerryBuc said, the edges of the pad are Chamfered (read: angle-cut) and will allow for more pad area contact as the pad wears. See attached picture.
