Replacing ball joint

Is it possible to replace the ball joint or do you have to replace the whole control arm? I know what the Factory Service Manual says (replace the whole arm) but there are quite a few companies that sell ball joints for our car, so there has to be a way. I was planning on taking this task on this coming weekend and just curious if anyone had any tips. I've got a kit I can borrow like this:

Is there anything I'm missing? Any reason I won't be able to do this job with hand tools and the screw ball joint kit?
