Oil leaking onto spark plug threads

I just bought a 2005 Mazda 3 2.0L with 134,000 miles on it. I noticed it had a rough idle but yet got 350 mile on 3/4 of a tank of gas. So I went to change the spark plugs an noticed that when I took the boot off there was oil on it. When i took out the spark plug oil was dripping off of it. This is the same for all 4 of them. I looked into the hole that the spark plug screws into and there is oil in there too.

Anyone have an idea of why this is happening. The dealership did the oil change before I bought it and when I looked at the dipstick after the car had been sitting for an hour, I notice the oil level was over a 1/4 inch past the max mark going up the dipstick. Could this be the reason because someone over filled the oil?

Please help!!! Thank you

Re: Oil leaking onto spark plug threads

could be an overfill or a leaky valve cover gasket.

Tubes in valve cover are most likely leaking. I believe there is a gasket or O-ring at the base to seal them. Someone else can chime in more on this. It is possible that someone could have overfilled or spilled a bunch of oil and it went down the tubes, like one of the other posters said.

I also heard that it could be due to a cracked filler cap. Someone said that Mazda was aware of the long plastic piece that goes over the engine that the oil cap screws into could have become cracked and that they made a new tougher one for it. Can anyone else confirm this?

You're referring to the plastic oil filter housing on the bottom of the engine.

These are silicone coil pack boots designed mainly to insulate the charge wire. They do have a seal designed into the top of them, but there shouldn't be oil up that high unless someone dumped it on the valvecover.

yeah if your getting oil in your spark plug holes, your valve cover gasket is gone. or just the dealership overfilled it and then because of the excess the valve cover couldnt completely seal it all.
