That I think is the key point right there. Mazda is trying to balance the mix of fun to drive yet efficient vehicle as well.

Not necessarily easy to do per se IMHO...especially if Mazda wants to keep some sort of Zoom-Zoom factor in their cars.

You can get a slighlty used merc, audi or bimmer for the same price. As a new 2.5l mazda hatch. Add an extra couple bucks and there's your wrx. Not sure how it'll affect the sales.
And let's be honest, who has fuel economy on the top of their priorities?

If they don't sell well at MSRP maybe they will be heavily discounted by dealers. I plan to test drive the 2.5L but will wait for more info on the USA VW Mk 7 Golf and GTI before making a decision.

I do, the wrx averages in the low 20's mpg I want something fun to drive yet gets good gas mileage and while not being too underpowered. I've also thought about getting a used luxury car too. With the money spent on a new 2.5 hatch GT, I can get a nice used luxury car but most of them use premium gas so that was a bit of a turn off for me lol So far there's no car out there that fits my needs and wants than the new 3, seems to tick all the boxes for me. I've wanted a 3 since 2007 but maybe finally I'll get one this time haha

Agreed about the maintenance costs but the point still remains the same. Price/quality the 2.5L ends up b eing a bit pricey.
If they can come in with a new speed 3 with MORE than the 200 bhp speculated (say 240+) and better mpg, everyone will be all over it.

Can we also assume that the speed3 is going to be ~3-4k more then the mid grade hatchback and almost pushing $30k?

Remember, the most recent MS3 with tech package came in at right around $28k. A fully equipped GT 5-door came in around $25.5k but that is with an auto. If it's a manual, it'll be about $1000 cheaper. Besides, it's fairly simple to negotiate several hundred off a standard 3. Maybe less so when the MS3 first comes out, though.

The Golf should start around $19k with the 1.8T and the Base GTI should come in at around $25k.
