'04 Mazda 3 - AC button won't turn on compressor

So I've had an issue lately with my AC I can't seem to resolve. Turning on the AC from the dash panel won't kick power to the compressor even though the green light on the AC button is on. I have checked the compressor and it works fine when provided with external power in the engine compartment, but doesn't seem to recognize or get power from the AC switch. I'm not sure if there is a simple fix in the dash panel or what? Also noted is that the green light on the AC button "flickers" a bit when changing the fan speed.

Any ideas of where to start my diagnosis? Could it just be a wiring fault somewhere between the dash and compressor? Would like to try and fix it on my own before resorting to taking it to the dealer. Any help is appreciated. TIA.

Maybe you're out of the AC juice (fre-on is it?)

My 04 did the same thing, turns out there was a leak and once the fre-on was back in the system, it was fine again.

You need to go to the autoparts store and ask for an R134a refrigerant kit. Its cheap and easy to use to refill your system. If it stops working again soon after, you definately have a leak that needs a mechanics touch. They will pull vacuum in the line and inject a dye that will show the leak by using a UV light. Then they fix the O-ring, ect., and refill the gas and you're all set. Usually costs about $60-120. But refilling it yourself is much cheaper and sometimes lasts years before it leaks out again.

Super thanks for the tip - I'll go pick up a kit and see what I can work out. Thanks much!

Not always though. My leak was pretty bad and they ended up replacing all of the piping. Car was out of warranty so that hurt my wallet a LOT. I'm talking about $1000ish.

I'll reiterate. For the dye test process, you should pay around 60. If they replace a couple O-rings, you should pay up to 120. But if you have bad components as say chi sin lo, it could cost 1000's. If you have a bad compressor, best suggestion would be to get a used one. That'll save you tons. Other stuff is not too bad.

I really hope for you, it's just the O-Ring. Because the AC repair on my 7years old/100k miles 2.3 was the MOST expensive repair and the ONLY mechanical repair to date.

How bad exactly? Umm, can't exactly tell you because they didn't tell me which pipe was leaking. I looked at the receipt and the parts were nothing compared to the labor hours it took to get the job done!

1/3 = parts
2/3 = labor hours!
