HELP PLEASE!!! dead battery= power steering problem????

i got back into my car and when i went to start it it turned over for a split second but did not start.i figured, dead battery. i got it jumped, let it run for like 5 min at 3000rpm and the went back to idle. when i turned my lights on i guess it put a load on the alternator and then stalled. so jumped it again let it run for like 10min and then reved it up a little and turned the lights on. then i started to drive around the parking lot and power steering was kinda off and on and the lights were flikering and dimming when i was turning and stuff. then it stalled again when i turned. jumped it again and drove home very carefully with off and on pwr str (right down the road). so right now i am hoping its just a dead batt and have it charging over night . i have some lights and an airhorn but all of those are fused could it be a short maybe? i will report back in the morning when i know the batt is charged. why would this effect the power steering?

I remember reading something about electrohydraulic power steering

No clue what that means though

Our power steering pump is actually motorized, and not powered by the accessory belt. If your charging system is weak, then it will affect the power steering pump motor, just like any other electrical accessory.

Re: HELP PLEASE!!! dead battery= power steering problem????

correct me if im wrong but normally if you have a dead batt and jump the car wait ten minutes with the car running, and then turn it off, shouldnt you have enough power to start it back up again? i doubt its a charging system problem b/c the car is only 7 months old and has 6000 miles.

Honestly, it does sound like a problem with your charging system--you said turning on the headlights caused your engine to stall after it had been running for 5 minutes. That's not normal. I'd definitely bring it in to the dealer, because something is up.

Oh, and electrohydraulic is the word you're looking for

Bad battery connections might also be likely. The EHPAS (power steering) can draw an amazing amount of current when you are driving slow and turning.
