automatic vs. manual

I know the manual is quicker in the hands of a good driver, but how much slower is the automatic next to the manual? 1/4mile? 0-60?

I have driven manuals before, but never owned one. I am sort of thinking about getting a manual transmission when i purchase my 3. The main reason I haven't bought a manual in my 4 previous cars is cause I'm lazy. Also with the 3, I think having the automatic you can shift would be too cool to pass up.

Whats everyones opinion on this? :?

thanks

automatic vs. manual

I prefer a manual but the wife refuses to drive one, so I always buy an ATX. The Sport tranny is more fun than without it. You say you're lazy, so buy the atx.

to answer your question, the ATX will be .5 to 1 full seconds slower to 60 in straight line acceleration. it could be worse if the driver didnt torque brake at all. i think once moving though, it'll be almost as responsive, minus drive train losses

Re: automatic vs. manual

I will never have an automatic, you are giving up a lot of power and a whole lot of responsiveness to the torque converter.

I'd say that .5 to 1 second slower 0-60 is a reasonable estimate.

Get the manual, you won't regret it.

We should pick one of these (say the biggest) and sticky it, it would help avoid these kind of repeat questions.

I've also seen "FAQ" forums on boards where these kinds of things get put.

Some candidates for the FAQ forum?

I think that is about right also. Some should take one out the the drag strip and the dyno to get some real numbers.
